India Extends Duty Free Lentl Imports

DELHI - Dec 26/23 - SNS -- India will allow lentils to be imported duty free until March 31, 2025, according to a gazette filing by the Ministry of Finance.

The government said the extension was given in hopes of containing food price inflation in the coming year.

India's official import data reveals 1.28 million metric tons (MT) of lentils were imported between January and October of 2023, setting a calendar year record for the commodity.

Canada is a key supplier of lentils to the country. The Canadian Grain Commission says that between August and November 78% or 355,800 MT of all lentils loaded for bulk export by terminal and primary elevators were destined for India, followed by 10% or 45,900 MT for the United Arab Emirates and 5% or 22,000 for Turkey.

It seems likely most of the bulk conventional shipments of lentils India are red, with more greens moving in containers. Official export data is only available for the August to October quarter. Over the quarter, 11% or 24,270 MT of all lentils shipped to India were declared as green. At the same times, India accounted for 46% of all lentils exported by Canada.
