Lentils In Holding Pattern

PANAMA - Jun 25/21 - SNS -- International lentil markets continued to lose steam over the past week in the face a seasonal slowing in spot demand and the absence of change in India's import duties.

Markets expected India to reduce import duties on lentils in June because of the belief government pulse production estimates for its 2020-21 production cycle are grossly inflated.

Efforts to secure long term agreements for pulse imports from Myanmar and Malawi are seen as confirmation the country will continue to struggle to produce more pulses than consumed annually, partly because of efforts to encourage increased output of oilseeds and other crops. That will increase competition for land use.
