Week of Worries in Lentils

PANAMA - Nov 6/20 - SNS -- Lentil markets finished the week's trading on a mixed note, with relatively wide spreads between exporters reported in some destinations.

Markets also doubt the capacity of exporters in many countries to finalize sales to India in time for the product to arrive before that country's import duties increase at the end of the year.

Two factors affect the capacity of exporters to continue selling to India and ensure product arrives before the end of December. The time needed to get containers and/or railcars, load them, and have them delivered to port locations. The second is the time between when the cargo arrives at port, is loaded on ships, and then the transit time to destination.

Canadian exporters have so far shown a clear preference for using containers to ship product to India. In August and September, 24,000 metric tons (MT) of lentils were loaded for bulk export to India, while total exports were just under 145,000 MT.
