Lentils Watching India and Sri Lanka

PANAMA - Jun 24/17 - SNS -- Green lentil markets continue to watch progress seeding this year's monsoon or kharif season crops in India.

While farmers have planted more of all crops than at this time last year, pulse area is 304,000 hectares lower to 597,000. This is also below the recent five year average of 800,000 hectares sown by the end of the third week of June.

Most of the drop is accounted for by tur or pigeon peas, with 125,000 hectares now in the ground, compared to 421,000 at this time last year. Some millers substitute green lentils for tur, making seeding progress for the crop a potentially important development.
