Canada Harvested 19% More Lentils

PANAMA - Dec 6/15 - SNS -- Statistics Canada reports this year's lentil harvest ended up at a record 2.373 million metric tons (MT), up 19% from last year. Lower average yields offset some of the 27% increase in seeded area to almost four million acres.

Farmers in Alberta grew 138,000 MT on 250,000 acres; while their counterparts in Saskatchewan produced 2.235 million MT on 3.7 acres of land.

Unofficial breakdowns of production by class saw farmers report growing 434,600 MT of large green; 1.77 million MT of red; 153,900 MT of small green; and 14,700 MT of all other classes.

Production in Alberta was pegged at 112,600 MT red lentils and 25,400 MT of other classes. Saskatchewan's farmers reporting growing 409,200 MT of large green; 1.657 million MT of red; 153,900 MT of small green; and 14,700 of other types of lentils.
