Chickpea Exports Stall as Australian Output Falls

VANCOUVER - Feb 13/15 - SNS -- Chickpea production in Australia is down sharply from last year, according to the crop report issued earlier this week by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES).

Breakdowns of production by class were not immediately available, but in recent years, an average 12% of the crop has been kabuli types and the balance desi type.

The emphasis reflects the needs of the Indian subcontinent. In recent years, 83% of all Australia's chickpea sales have been to Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
