Duty Change Boosts Desi Chickpea

PANAMA - May 3/24 - SNS -- Australian chickpea growers and exporters are starting the coming week on a happpier note.

Effective May 4, India reduced import duties on desi type chickpeas from 40% to zero. The change will remain in effect until pending any further changes. At the moment, most market participants exect them to remain at zero until at least March 31, 2025.

The decision is prmpted by efforts to reduce food price inflation to consumers and suggests available supplies of domestic from the rabi harvest are low relative to prospective domestic consumption rates.
