Chickpeas Continue to Strengthen

VANCOUVER - Aug 12/11 - SNS -- International chickpea markets continue to strengthen through the past week as available supplies from net exporting nations continued to tighten.

Markets are looking forward to the North American harvest to help relieve some demand pressure until new crop supplies are available from Australia later in the year and from India in the new year.

During the week, the USDA updated acreage estimates for chickpeas grown in that country. Total area is now pegged at 77,261 acres for a potential 133,010 metric ton (MT) crop. This is down from the 146,000 MT produced on 87,952 acres last year.
