India Has Lentils On Tender Hooks

PANAMA - May 14/21 - SNS -- International lentil markets are holding their breath over expectations India may soon eliminate import duties in an effort to relieve food price inflation and internal supply disruptions.

News that quantity restrictions have been eliminated until October 31 for several classes of beans now has most exporters believing India will significantly reduce or eliminate import duties on lentils until at least October 31.

An unknown quantity of lentils has already been bought by importers in India for shipment starting in June because of their belief the government has no option but to change import duty levels.
