Lentils Unaffected By StatsCan Estimate

PANAMA - Aug 31/18 - SNS -- Lentil markets finished the week's trading on a firmer note, with growers selling advancing at a relatively strong pace to meet opening season bulk export demand.

There was not surprised in Statistics Canada's first production estimate of the season. Though the direct survey of farmers was completed before the harvest had begun in most regions, yields are not significantly different than those reported by provincial agriculture departments after the harvest was three quarters complete.

Statistics Canada expects production to total 2.167 million metric tons (MT), with yields averaging 1.268 pounds per seeded acre, down slightly from last year's 1,280 pound average. Provincial agriculture departments expect yields to be closer to 1,316 pounds for a 2.249 million MT crop, down from last year's 2.559 million MT harvest.
