Lentil Focus Away From Record Crops
PANAMA - Dec 11/16 - SNS -- Confirmation of record lentil harvests in Canada and Australia had little impact on markets during the past week.
Statistics Canada pegged the Canadian harvest at 3.25 million metric tons (MT), up from 2.54 million last year; while the Australian harvest is expected to total 450,000 MT, compared to 258,200 last year. The final number for the United States will be released by the USDA in January, but initial estimates set the crop at 564,093 MT, up from 239,318 last year.
Even so, exporters and processors remain focussed on meeting export sales commitments before the Christmas and New Years holiday season, creating ongoing spot market demand for product from growers.
