Quality Dominates Canadian Lentils

PANAMA - Oct 7/16 - SNS -- Quality issues in Canada remain the dominant factor in green lentil markets, supporting values there and in the United States.

Canada's harvest made some progress during the past week, but farmers are struggling to bring in the last 5% of the crop. Because of rain delays, the harvest only advanced one percentage point during the previous week to 95% complete.

While red lentils weather better than greens, rain delays are an issue for both major classes because of the potential impact on quality. When lentils get dry and wet over and over again, seed coats can loosen, resulting in a product which cannot be sold in markets where lentils are packaged.
