Lentils Argue Over Seeded Area

PANAMA - Jun 11/16 - SNS -- Lentil markets are starting the transition into a new crop trading basis now that seeding is complete and supplies of spot merchandise are unusually tight.

Debate over the size of the crop is heating up, with several market participants thinking farmers did not seed more lentils than intended; while others believe a minimum of six million acres were sown this year.

If actual area is the same or lower than the intentions, it would be an unusual event. During the past five years, the final lentil area averaged 20% more than the intentions, compared to 18% more last year, 9% more in 2014 and 32% more in 2013.
