No Surprise In Record Lentil Area
PANAMA - Apr 30/16 - SNS -- International lentil markets were little changed to firmer after confirmation from Statistics Canada that farmers in Canada intend to plant over five million acres of the crop this year.
This is the biggest single year increase in acreage terms, with area jumping 30% from 3.95 to a record 5.14 million acres.
Lentil inventories are considered very tight and residual stocks could finish the year at just 100,000 metric tons (MT) for a 3.8% stocks to use ratio. Even so, planting seed was never viewed as a limiting factor in this year's long anticipated boom in seeded area.
