Peanut Crop Remains Behind Last Year

WASHINGTON - Sep 11/14 - SNS -- Peanut production is forecast at 4.97 billion pounds, down 2% from the August forecast but up 19% from last year, according to the USDA's latest crop forecasts.

Based on administrative data, planted area, at 1.34 million acres, is up 2% from the June estimate and up 26% from the previous year. Area for harvest is expected to total 1.31 million acres, up 2% from August and 25% higher than 2013.

Based on conditions as of September 1, the average yield for the United States is forecast at 3,800 pounds per acre, down 164 pounds from the August forecast and 206 pounds below the 2013 average yield of 4,006 pounds per acre.
