Markets Doubt Canaryseed Intentions

VANCOUVER - Apr 26/14 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets finished a relatively quiet week of trading on a mixed note because of a growing thought more land could be sown to crops in the sector than currently intended.

This is certainly seen as true in Canada, where Statistics Canada reports farmers only intend to plant 245,000 acres of canaryseed. Though up from the current estimate of 210,000 for 2013, the numbers are generally perceived as being too low. Whether this is the case will not be known until more export trade data is available.

In the United States, by contrast, recent rainfall events could push seeding back for several crops. Since sunflower can be planted later, this could see land switch back into sunflower late in June.
