U.S. Cotton Production Down 25%

WASHINGTON - Aug 12/13 - SNS -Production of all classes of cotton in the United States is forecast at 13.1 million 480-pound bales, down 25% from last year, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

Yield is expected to average 813 pounds per harvested acre, down 74 pounds from last year. Upland cotton production is forecast at 12.5 million 480-pound bales, down 25% from 2012. Pima cotton production, forecast at 579,800 bales, is down 26% from last year. Producers expect to harvest 7.70 million acres of all cotton, down 18% from 2012. This harvested total includes 7.52 million acres of Upland cotton and 183,800 acres of Pima cotton.

Area planted to Upland cotton is estimated at 10.0 million acres, down slightly from June and down 17% from last year. Harvested area is expected to total 7.52 million acres, down 18% from 2012. Pima cotton planted area is estimated at 186,000 acres, down 18% from June and down 22% from last year. Expected harvested area, at 183,800 acres, is down 22% from the previous year.
