Canaryseed Collapse

VANCOUVER - Jun 25/13 - SNS -- If Statistics Canada's seeded area estimate is correct, interest in growing canaryseed has collapsed in Canada.

For the first time since 1985, seeded area could be under 200,000 acres. The number is 13% under the March seeding intention -- which itself was universally rejected as unrealistically low, and almost half last year's area.

Canaryseed production is only reported for Saskatchewan. Farmers say they are growing 55,000 acres of hairless glabrous type and 110,000 acres of regular canaryseed.
