Limited Grower Selling Supports Lentils

VANCOUVER - May 10/13 - SNS -- North American lentil markets maintained their firm tone through the past week as offers from growers were closely aligned with the short terms needs of the market.

Limited seeding progress was reported in parts of Saskatchewan, while planting is nearing the finish line in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and parts of Montana.

Markets are optimistic farmers in Saskatchewan will recover some of the time lost because of the late departure of winter. Forecasts for the coming week call for below normal precipitation and above normal temperatures, which will help soils dry more quickly.

Some processors have been surprised by the speed with which soils have dried. This is clearly reflected in the fact a large part of Saskatchewan's agricultural area is considered to be at a high risk of grass and brush fire.
