Year Starts With Tight Birdseed Stocks

VANCOUVER - Jan 14/13 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets are starting the new year with confirmation of a steep decline in key ingredients in the United States.

In its final crop report for 2012, the USDA reported that production of white proso millet and safflower seed were down from last year, while the increase in confectionary sunflower was smaller than expected.

Production of proso millet in 2012 totaled 3.09 million bushels from 335,000 acres. Area was down 9%, but the drought lowered yields, with the result production fell 66%.
