Bigger Canadian Chickpea Crop

VANCOUVER - Oct 5/12 - SNS -- Canadian chickpea production is expected to reach 116,100 MT from 180,000 acres, up from the 90,800 MT produced last year on 125,000 acres.

Statistics Canada pegged production in Saskatchewan at 95,900 MT from 150,000 acres. Though Statistics Canada earlier reported 30,000 acres of chickpeas were planted in Alberta, it did not estimate production for the province. It is expected to reach 21,000 MT.

The carry-over from the 2011-12 season was just 12,000 MT, while imports are forecast at 7,000 MT, for an available supply of 135,100, up 13.7% from last season.
