Friendlier Lentil Supply Outlook

VANCOUVER - Aug 22/12 - SNS -- Less lentils were planted in western Canada this year than initially thought, resulting in a smaller than expected prospective harvest, according to the first crop estimate of the year from Statistics Canada.

In the report, Statistics Canada said lentil area dropped 190,000 acres to 2.38 million instead of rising by 40,000.

Markets are happy to see a reduction in lentil area because excess supply has made it harder for markets to participate in the generally bullish sentiment affecting field crop markets.
