U.S. Lentil Acreage Up 12%

WASHINGTON - Jul 11/12 - SNS -- Farmers in the United States planted 12% more lentils than last year, according to the USDA's latest crop report, falling short of the 21% increase they planned to undertake in March.

Seeded area ended up at 478,000 acres, up from 428,000 last year, but short of the 518,000 they originally planned to seed. The USDA expects this will result in 461,000 acres being harvested this year, up 12% from last year.

In Montana, 94% of the crop had emerged by June 3, compared with 46% last year. As of July 1, 65% of the crop was blooming, compared with 18% a year ago. Crop condition was rated mostly in the good to excellent range, despite continued hot dry conditions.
