Chickpea Story Gets Tougher

VANCOUVER - Aug 26/11 - SNS -- North American chickpea production prospects seem to get worse with each crop report, instead of improving.

In its first estimate of the year, Statistics Canada said it appears total area in chickpeas in that country plunged from an intended 105,000 acres to just 75,000 acres.

Production is forecast at 53,900 metric tons (MT), less than half the 128,300 MT grown last year and the smallest chickpea crop since 2004, which remains the lowest point of the past decade.
