Chickpea Markets Remain Firm

VANCOUVER - Jul 30/11 - SNS -- International chickpea markets maintained their firm tone in light trade through the past week.

Markets are wrestling with a fundamental shortage of kabuli type chickpeas on account of the crop failure in Mexico, problems with India's crop, and a reduced acreage in Canada and the United States.

That has led to a general reluctance on the part of processors to offer product until they have either secured it from growers or are confident growers will support their asking prices.
