Few Changes in lentils

VANCOUVER - Apr 22/11 - SNS -- Lentil markets finished the week's trading mostly unchanged with neither end users nor growers pressing markets.

Supplies of good quality green lentils remain fundamentally tight, though unexpected scrutiny of shipments to the European Union deeply concerns some shippers.

Random testing discovered lentil shipments which exceeded the EU's maximum residue limit for glyphosate. Since the manufacturer never requested an MRL for glyphosate on lentils, a default level was chosen.

The default is well below levels considered safe for human consumption. But, getting government officials to change their approach is proving extremely difficult, with the industry expecting it will take at least 12 months to establish new MRLs for lentils.
