Glyphosate Dominates Lentil Conversation

VANCOUVER - Apr 15/11 - SNS -- "You know nothing is going on in markets when everyone is talking about herbicide residues. Print that," quipped one Canadian pulse exporter just before departing for an early weekend.

What they were talking about is well known. There is no doubt import officials in all countries randomly test cargoes to make sure they do not violate their maximum residue limit (MRL) or the wide range of herbicides and pesticides used in modern agriculture. Whenever the limits are violated, it is not uncommon for more inbound cargoes to be tested.

This may have been the case with lentils entering the European Union. In February a shipment of organic lentils from Turkey was rejected for exceeding the MRL for glyphosate. Other shipments have since been rejected, with media reports saying they include one shipment of organic lentils from Canada.
