Saskatchewan Supports Bangladesh Research

SASKATOON - Mar 16/11 - SNS -- Biofortification research projects being undertaken by the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh will be jointly financed by the Saskatchewan government and the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG) under a memorandum of understanding signed between it and the University of Saskatchewan.

Up to $800,000 will be provided in equal amounts by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG).

"The Saskatchewan pulse research community is expanding the scope of its lentil research to include the entire value chain for lentils, beginning with production on the farm and ending with the nutritional impact on consumers in specific markets like Bangladesh where nutrition deficiency is a concern," said Dr. Kofi Agblor, Director of Research at SPG.

"Biofortification is a sustainable approach to improve and sustain the nutritional quality of lentils with essential micronutrients like iron, zinc and selenium for the betterment of human health," he added.

The next step will be for SPG and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture to work with both Universities to develop a workplan for research collaboration.
