Chickpea Estimates Surprise Markets

VANCOUVER - Dec 3/10 - SNS -- Canadian chickpea production estimates continue to amaze markets, with initial numbers being wildly different than the final estimates released by Statistics Canada.

This year was no different. Statistics Canada boosting estimated seeded area from 150,000 to 205,000 acres. Production ended up at 128,300 MT, up sharply from the 75,500 grown last year.

Acreage estimates for this crop experience the most volatility of all crops, with substantial revisions taking place throughout the season. This reflects the fact it is a small acreage crop and less widely grown than other crops surveyed by Statistics Canada.
