Chickpea Production Worries

VANCOUVER - Oct 10/10 - SNS -- Chickpea markets ended the week's trading on a firm note against rising concern over the size of crops in Canada and Australia because damp weather in both countries helped diseases flourish.

This has left markets in doubt of the latest production estimates from Statistics Canada and worried the Australian government has over-stated the size of that country's crop.

Last week, Australian officials said growing conditions in some of the country's key chickpea growing areas are allowing aschochyta blight to flourish in crops, raising doubts about this year's quality and yields but next year's crop.

Some growers are facing their toughest season for ascochyta blight since 1998 – the year the disease first emerged as a problem in Australian crops – and dry weather is now desperately needed to limit the disease's spread.
