Birdseeds Post Further Advances

PANAMA - Mar 26/21 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets finished the week on a firm note as supplies relative to prospective demand through the end of the current marketing year continue to tighten.

Fundamental supplies of white proso millet are unusually tight because of last year's poor growing season. Average yields sank from 1.838 pounds per acre in 2019 to just 847, with the result that despite a jump in seeded area from 506,000 to 609,000 acres, production sank from almost 422,000 metric tons (MT) to just under 234,000.

Millet is a multi use crop, with birdseed packagers representing just one demand element. This is sharp contrast to canaryseed, with virtually the entire crop going into birdseed markets despite efforts to gain broader acceptance for the crop for human consumption.
