Higher Than Hoped Chickpea Yields

PANAMA - Sep 14/19 - SNS -- Chickpea markets remain under supply pressure, though some processors are reporting improved buying interest at current prices.

Gross yields in Canada continue to look good, with both Statistics Canada and provincial agriculture departments optimistic about this year's production potential. However, markets believe the marketable surplus will be lower than might otherwise be the case because disease and poor harvest conditions.

Statistics Canada thinks this year's harvest could reach 262,700 metric tons (MT), compared to 311,300 last year and the recent five year average of 148,000. Yield estimates by crop reporters in Saskatchewan suggest the crop may be 20,000 MT smaller at 242,000.
