Output Jumps 58% Despite Poor Yield
WASHINGTON - Nov 10/15 - SNS -- Lentil production in the United States is forecast at 5.32 million cwt (100 pound units) or 241,495 metric tons, up 58% from last year, according to the latest USDA crop production estimates for 2015.
Area for harvest is forecast at 475,000 acres, up 83% from the previous year. Average yield is expected to be 1,121 pounds per acre, down 179 pounds from 2014. If realized, planted and harvested acreage will both be the second highest on record, behind only the 2010 season.
In North Dakota, planting was complete by the end of May, approximately three weeks ahead of last year. Harvest began in early-August and was complete by the last week of September, also about three weeks ahead of last season. Moisture supplies were rated adequate to surplus throughout the season with yield and production up from a year ago.
In Idaho, Montana, and Washington, high temperatures and drought-like conditions throughout the growing season lowered yields from 2014. However, increased harvested area offset lower yields, with Montana's production up 44% from a year ago.
