Canaryseed, Situation Normal . . .
PANAMA - Oct 10/15 - SNS -- Canaryseed has become a small area specialty crop in Canada. Even so, Canada remains the most important export producer in the world, forcing the birdseed industry to pay close attention to events there.
However, the statistics which explain the market's fundamental supply situation have become corrupted in recent years.
Problems with the statistics go back to at least the 2013 harvest, when local processors and growers in western Canada became more adamant in their argument that Statistics Canada was under estimating seeded area and production.
This argument carried over into ending stocks and the ongoing supply situation for the crop. It came to a head during the past season as it became obvious the numbers were wrong.
