Quality Worries Rise in Canadian Peas

VANCOUVER - Aug 30/14 - SNS -- Canadian field pea markets finished the week's trading on an uneasy note in the face of slow harvest progress and strong opening season movement.

Only 12% of Saskatchewan field pea crop has been harvested, while the Alberta harvest is well advanced. Progress is well below average for this time of year. Normally a third of the field pea crop is in the bin by August 25.

This level of harvest progress is not unprecedented. By this time in 2010, 15% of the crop was in the bin; while in 2004 only 11% had been harvested. In most years, harvest progress ranged from a third to two-thirds complete.
