Chinese Pea Imports To Keep Rising

TAIYUAN - Aug 30/14 - SNS -- China's imports of Canadian Field pea are expected to continue to expand rapidly in the next two years, potentially exceeding demand from India by 2016, believes Boasheng Zhang of Cofco-Shandong Vermicelli and Beans Import Export Company from Qingdao, China.

Investment in new fractionation plants is driving import demand now that the quantity of peas used to manufacture vermicelli noodles is no longer expanding beyond normal trend growth, he told delegates attending the China Pulse Import and Export Industry Conference organized by the China Chamber of Commerce of Foodstuffs and Native Produce.

Less significant is continued growth in demand for peas for novel uses and snacks. A recent, interesting development, has been the use of peas to manufacture golden tofu in parts of southern China. Growth in this sector reflects ongoing economic expansion and rising living standards.
