Logistics Dominates Peas

VANCOUVER - Mar 21/14 - SNS -- International field pea markets were little changed against relatively light trading interest during the past week.

The focus remains on logistical problems in Canada and the United States. Markets have added Black Sea ports to the list of concerns because of the continued confrontation between Russia and NATO over political influence.

Logistical problems in North America reflect the confluence of several factors. It starting with a slower start to the harvest in western Canada and North Dakota. It was compounded by a record crop, the coldest winter in over 25 years, and increased competition for train crews and engines from other commodities.

Canada's situation is complicated by ongoing government interference in rail transportation.
