World Pulse Trade Strong in January

VANCOUVER - Mar 7/14 - SNS -- The world's three major pulse exporters registered a relatively strong performance in January, with combined shipments of key pulses and specialty crops from Canada, the United States and Australia finishing the month at 563,488 metric tons (MT).

Shipments were 2% above December and 7% above the same month last year. Lentils recorded the strongest overall performance, with shipments rising above month and year-earlier levels to total 220,147 MT in January.

By contrast, combined chickpea exports from the three countries dropped 23% below both month and 54% below year-earlier levels to total just 37,327 MT. Field pea movement down modestly from December at 220,147 MT, for a 7% increase over the quantity shipped from Canada, the U.S. and Australia during January of 2013.
