Fifth Smallest Safflower Harvest

WASHINGTON - Jan 10/14 - SNS -- Production of safflower in 2013, at 209 million pounds, is up 17% from 2012 but is the fifth lowest production since records began in 1991, according to the USDA's final production estimates for the 2013 crop.

Growers planted 175,500 acres in 2013, an increase of 3% from last year's planted area. Harvested area, at 170,000 acres, is up 6% from the previous year.

Average yield, at 1,232 pounds per acre, increased 111 pounds from 2012. The yield in Montana was the highest on record, more than 20% above the previous record high.
