Chickpeas Open 2013 Under Pressure

VANCOUVER - Jan 4/13 - SNS -- International chickpea markets are starting the new year under significant selling pressure from India, which has forced exporters in Canada and Argentina to revise asking prices lower.

While total land in pulses is down from last year, India's Agriculture Department says chickpea area is up, bringing with it the potential for an larger harvest.

Land sown to desi type chickpeas is estimated at 8.94 million hectares as of January 4, up from 8.637 million at this time last year. Total chickpea production was expected to be up as farmers in India expand land in both desi and kabuli type in response to last year's bullish domestic and international market conditions for both crops.
