USDA Optimistic About Chickpea Price Prospects

WASHINGTON - Sep 28/12 - SNS -- Market analysts with the USDA's Economic Research Service are extremely optimistic about chickpea price prospects for growers in the United States, believing the coming season's weighted average price could be 11% higher than was the case in 2011-12.

That is a surprising conclusion at a time when several years of record or near record values has resulted in a world-wide effort to boost production. Now that seeding India's monsoon or kharif season crop is wrapping up, the focus is shifting to the coming rabi or winter season crop.

Late monsoon rainfall activity has helped overcome the slow start, helping recharge soil moisture reserves in the key rabi season pulse producing states. This is critical to chickpea markets because both India's desi and kabuli chickpea crops are rabi season crops.
