India Crop Fears Lift Chickpeas

VANCOUVER - Jan 21/11 - SNS -- International chickpea markets finished the week;s trading on a firm note, helped by concerns about the status of winter or rabi season crops in India.

Chickpeas are the primary pulse grown in India during the rabi season. Nearly all the production is desi type chickpeas for domestic consumption, but a growing fraction is comprised of dollar or kabuli chickpeas, which are the only pulse that can be exported.

Total rabi season pulse plantings are up 8% from last year at almost 14.82 million hectares planted so far this season. Planting will soon be completed, while harvesting of the earliest seeded chickpeas and other pulses will begin in February.
