Modest Drop in Mustard Area

PANAMA - May 9/20 - SNS -- Mustard seed markets were somewhat surprised so hear farmers in Canada plan to reduce land in the crop from 398,600 to 394,500 acres this year.

Many markets participants were expected a moderate increase in area, with some believing future surveys will show that to be the case. Fewer farmers than normal were included in this year's seeding intentions survey because of efforts to contain the spread the COVID-9 coronavirus.

If the numbers hold up and yields are average, production of all classes of mustard seed will climb from 134,600 to 144,000 metric tons (MT). Statistics Canada did not break down are by class, but growers are expected to continue to place more emphasis on brown and yellow than oriental.
