Fundamental Worries Strengthen Chickpeas

PANAMA CITY - Oct 30/15 - SNS -- International chickpea markets finished the week's trading on a firmer note, helped by changing market fundamentals in Argentina and the Indian subcontinent.

Worries over available supplies of desi chickpeas, pigeon pea and other key pulses on the Indian subcontinent have increased since the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) issuing two tenders to buy 10,000 metric tons (MT) of desi chickpeas.

That is welcome news to Australia growers and exporters, who are looking at a massive increase in domestic production. This year's seeded area ended up a record 1.55 million acres. The last official production estimates foresee a record 990,000 MT harvest, up from 621,000 last year.
