Canadian Harvest Virtually Complete

VANCOUVER - Oct 24/14 - SNS -- This year's pulse harvest and specialty crop harvest is winding down, with most farmers in Saskatchewan done with this year's harvest, judging from the latest crop progress report from the provincial agriculture department.

Of all crops sown in Saskatchewan, 95% have now been harvested. The west-central, northeastern and northwestern regions are all reporting 99% of the crop in the bin. The southwestern region has combined 97% of the crop, the southeastern region 93% and the east-central region 91%.

Roughly 99% of the peas and lentils, 98% of the mustard, 97% of barley and canola, 96% of durum and oats, 95% of spring wheat, 93% of canaryseed, 83% of chickpeas and flax and 62% of soybeans have been combined.

Reported yields have been average overall; however, there are reports of above-average yields in some areas. Little crop damage was reported this week.

With the exception of chickpeas, yield reports from Saskatchewan's crop reporters continue to point to a bigger overall crop than forecast by Statistics Canada earlier this month.
