Dutch Feed Sector Targets Sustainable Soy

WASHINGTON - Oct 15/14 - SNS -- The Dutch livestock feed sector intends to only source soybeans certified as produced accordingly the requirements set by the Round Table of Responsible Soy (RTRS) beginning at January 1, according to the U.S. agricultural attache for the country.

"Considering anti-trust regulations and with the development of alternative soy sustainability programs the Dutch sector extended their requirement to programs which are equivalent to RTRS," the agricultural attache noted. The efforts to only source sustainable soy could create an additional opportunity for Saskatchewan's nascent soybean industry.

The Dutch Feed Industry Association (NEVEDI) believes the sector will reach its end goal of only sourcing sustainable soy. NEVEDI approved a two-track sourcing policy.

The first track will only supply livestock, poultry and dairy production destined for the domestic market and only RTRS certified soy is eligible for this purpose. This market is estimated at 600,000 metric tons (MT). The second track will supply the sector's production share destined for export. This market is estimated at 1,200,000 MT and must be certified by alternative sustainability programs, which are accepted by the NEVEDI, such as the Soybean Sustainability Assurance Protocol (SSAP) and Proterra.
