Weakness Continues in Birdseeds

VANCOUVER - Aug 2/14 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets registered a mostly weaker performance during the past week against optimism about crops in the United States.

White proso millet markets were sharply lower on both grower and inter-dealer markets. Grower bids dropped under eight cents per pound to or U.S. $176 per metric ton (MT) for the first time since October of 2010.

Such a wide price spread between that and canaryseed will combine with an overall reduction in production in Canada to make domestic packagers maximize use of millet at the expense of canaryseed.
