Saskatchewan Crop Development Delayed

VANCOUVER - Jun 26/14 - SNS -- Saskatchewan's farmers have virtually finished seeding this year's pulse and specialty crops, but almost half the crop is developing at a slower than normal pace because of the delay in seeding and cool wreather, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture's Weekly Crop Report.

Despite the delays in development, most crops are rated in fair to excellent condition. This is true for 98% of Saskatchewan's lentil and field pea crops, as well as 99% of the mustard and soybean area; all of the chickpeas; and 97% of this year's canaryseed fields.

Heavy rain was received in most of the province, with some areas reporting well over 100 mm. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 37% surplus, 61% adequate and 2% short. Unless fields dry out, this will have an impact on crop conditions and increase the risk of disease development.
