India Starts Planting Kharif Pulses

VANCOUVER - Jun 13/14 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's kharif or monsoon season crops is underway in India, with farmers showing some enthusiasm for pulses.

The country's agriculture department says preliminary reports indicate 238,000 hectares of rice has been sown/transplanted, along with 78,000 hectares of oilseeds; 4.32 million hectares of sugarcane and 1.734 million hectares of cotton.

Pulses are being planted at a faster than normal pace, with an estimated 242,000 hectares planted as of June 13, up 29% from last year and 40% above the recent five-year average for the middle of June.
