Light Demand Weakens Birdseeds

VANCOUVER Oct 6/13 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets were little changed in limited end user demand during the past week.

Massive price declines in white proso millet seed have combined with unease in sunflower markets to make many birdseed buyers withdraw from markets.

SunPrairie Grain's Kayla Burkhart made this point, saying that finding a "birdfood bid right now is pretty dang tough as buyers are all running. That leaves us to the NuSun/oil market for demand right now. . . .

"(B)irdfood buyers are running scared and crush prices seem to fall several times daily. Demand just isn't there and cheaper corn prices (thus cheaper corn oil) means cheaper sunflower prices as well. The flax market is also struggling to hold ground. The large Canadian crop is making up for what didn't get seeded in the US this year and that means prices could struggle to maintain current values. Export demand is estimated to be fairly quiet this year."
